I recommend getting this book first as an initial companion to learning Blender. It covers some of the basics and gives different examples to follow along with in an easy-to-understand manner. Kudos to the Blender foundation for this gem!

When you're ready to get more advanced and want to get your feet wet with character animation, pick up this book. It also touches on some areas outside of just animation, necessary for the projects you follow along with.

Explore some other concepts such as sculpting, UV texturing, node-based materials, the video sequencer, scripting with Python, the game engine, etc. The author assumes you have knowledge of Blender going in, so consider this book only after feeling comfortable with the basics.

As the title suggests, learn how to use Blender's Particles, Soft Bodies, Cloth, Hair, Fluids and Physics. It also touches on the Game Engine. Unlike many of the books on Blender, this one has full-color photos on every page!

Aside from learning to build basic furniture models, this book will introduce some of Blender's mesh editing tools. It also delves into precision modeling, revealing how to use edge lengths, etc. Furthermore, it touches on texturing, lighting and rendering, along with how to do an interactive walkthrough.

     
 

Foundation Blender Compositing by Roger Wickes

This book goes more in-depth regarding how to use Blender's Node-based compositing system, as well as its Video Sequencer. Learn how to make transitions and special effects, along with Green Screen removal. Finally, see how to bring it all together to complete your animation.

The Blender Gamekit: Interactive 3D for Artists by Carsten Wartmann

Anyone interested in the Blender Game Engine should pick up this book. It will introduce you to Blender's basic tools first, then go into the Logic area. You will follow along with a few different mini-games to see how they were created, so you can build on those skills to create your own games.

     
 

Blender For Dummies by Jason van Gumster

If you can get past the title of this infamous series and admit you're a Dummy when it comes to Blender, by all means check out this book. You'll be taken on an introductory tour of Blender in regards to: interface, transform tools, mesh editing, sculpting, curves, materials and texturing, lighting and rendering, animation and rigging, compositing and editing, etc.

Digital Lighting and Rendering (2nd Edition) by Jeremy Birn

The quality of your final renders will largely depend on how well the scene is lit. This great book will provide you knowledge on how to set up basic lighting systems. It will also give you some modeling hints to enhance the realism of your scenes, in regards to light interaction.

     
 

Digital Texturing and Painting by Owen Demers

Aside from learning the basics of texturing, the great thing about this book is that it covers some color theory, along with how to make your own textures from photographs. By breaking down exactly what you're seeing, this book will guide you in creating more accurate textures. A tileable texture how-to with Photoshop is also included as an exercise.

     
 

The Animator's Survival Kit--Revised Edition: A Manual of Methods, Principles and Formulas for Classical, Computer, Games, Stop Motion and Internet Animators by Richard Williams

This is the animator's MUST HAVE book, since 3D animation is simply a sequence of 2D renders. You can learn tons from this "workbook" by using some tracing paper and following along with the endless walk cycle examples alone.

     
 

The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston

This could be a must have book in regards to reference and the hisory of Disney more than anything. This is not a workbook, like "The Animator's Survival Kit," but it does go over basic principles of animation. Besides, how can you be an animator and not have this book in your library?

     
 

The Art of 3D Computer Animation and Effects by Isaac Kerlow

For anyone still wondering how it's all made when it comes to comptuer animation, this book will show you the process. You'll also see photo examples of the work of all the common animation and gaming companies including Pixar, Disney, ILM, Dreamworks, Electronic Arts, etc.
